We were at Cornelius Elementary School in Forest Grove School District for their Professional Learning Community(PLC) time!

Angella Graves, principal at Cornelius Elementary, and early learning coordinator for Forest Grove School District shared, “During this PLC time, educators from different grade levels explored and discussed all of the resources that the Children Institute’s Core Team has created alongside our GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) trainer and English Language Development Teacher. Educators used this time to brainstorm and choose one of the resources to put into practice in their classrooms.”

After spending over a decade teaching high school students in both California and Oregon, Shawnté wanted to find ways to help shift the system to be more inclusive and welcoming for her students. This led to her work with 9th grade on track initiatives in Oregon, leveraging continuous improvement to co-create culturally relevant opportunities for students to thrive. At the heart of her desire to do this work is a dedication to redress practices of harm that have impacted students who the system was designed to disempower and to create more inclusive classrooms where all children feel like they belong.

Early Works and Early School Success

Our work with school communities across Oregon demonstrates what happens when school districts, educators, community partners, parents and families, and funders come together with a shared vision to support early learning and healthy development for young children. Kids thrive, families are engaged and empowered to support their children’s learning, and the school community flourishes.

Since 2010, we’ve helped build community-centered early learning programs that have transformed schools and created opportunities for young children and their families. That work continues to shape state policy and strengthen early learning, preschool through grade 5.

Health and Learning Initiative

The Health and Learning Initiative is a partnership between Children’s Institute, the Oregon Health Authority, and the Oregon Pediatric Improvement Partnership to transform the relationship between Oregon’s health care and early learning systems.

Our recent work developing an incentive metric for Coordinated Care Organizations focused on social and emotional health is the first of its kind in the nation.
