Little Learners, Big Foundations: Where Development, Culture, and the Science of Literacy Come Together
Just 40 percent of Oregon third graders read and write at grade level, and nearly half of Oregon fourth graders cannot yet demonstrate even foundational reading skills. But ensuring the kids read at grade level requires starting long before they get to grade school. Differences in language and vocabulary emerge before age three, so for Oregon's new investments in early literacy to succeed, we need to provide Oregon’s youngest kids with relationships and experiences that build the foundation of reading. During the GLR Week, Children’s Institute and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading invite you to a conversation with early literacy specialist Erin Lolich. Together, we'll unpack three approaches often framed as competing priorities: developmentally appropriate practice, culturally responsive teaching, and the science of literacy. Through examples, discussion, and shared learning, participants will explore how these approaches can reinforce one another and help build stronger foundations for reading.
