A good idea can begin in a single classroom. Lasting change depends on what surrounds it.
Since 2019, Children’s Institute’s Early School Success (ESS) initiative has partnered with Oregon school districts as educators strengthen their practice, respond to children’s needs, and learn what works in their communities.
This summer, the ESS Back-to-School Kickoff offered a glimpse of that network in action. Educators and district leaders from Beaverton, Forest Grove, and St. Helens came together with a shared ambition for children and very different vantage points on how to get there.
That difference is an advantage.
What works in a larger school system may take a different shape in a smaller one. Communities bring different strengths. Educators encounter different barriers. Putting those experiences in conversation creates more possibilities than any district could generate on its own.
At the kickoff, participants put that idea into practice. In one activity, they reflected on continuous improvement, professional learning, and network learning, sharing what those approaches look like across their schools and districts. This collaborative activity will help define the cohort’s approach in the year ahead. Participants want more opportunities to see how colleagues were tackling familiar challenges, understand the thinking behind different approaches, and consider what those ideas could unlock back home. Classroom visits, shared resources, and continued Learning Labs were among the possibilities that emerged.
Participants also worked through Early School Success research-to-practice student scenarios, exploring how research could inform the decisions they make in schools. The activity sparked ideas participants will carry into the year ahead. For one team, the day offered a motivating shift in perspective. Amid concerns about funding cuts and fewer supports, conversations with colleagues helped them look for bright spots and leave feeling encouraged about what they can make possible for children in the year ahead.
The exchange also gave CI’s continuous improvement specialists and facilitators for the day – Talisa Timms & Julio Bautista– a sharper view of the landscape. Listening to the conversations in the room helped them understand the shared challenges and local needs, and shape coaching and professional learning around what educators find most pressing.
That is the opportunity ESS has been building toward. Each district brings deep knowledge of its own children and community. The ESS network connects that knowledge across different places. And Children’s Institute helps turn what emerges into stronger support for what comes next.
