About Early School Success
How We Partner
At Children’s Institute, we believe every child has the right to a strong early education. That’s why we launched Early School Success (ESS) in 2019. ESS was built on a simple but powerful idea: when school districts partner with families, early educators, and elementary teachers, young children have better learning outcomes.
Through ESS, we collaborate with districts to:
- Understand what’s working and what could work better
- Design strategies rooted in research on how young children learn
- Strengthen partnerships between schools and families
- Support educators with coaching and professional development

Beyond the numbers, here’s how our work is truly shaping experiences and inspiring change.
Collaboration that shapes schools
Educators in our Early School Success network are working together in new ways, across roles and schools, to make decisions that improve teaching and learning. These shifts are helping schools grow stronger, from the classroom to the district level.
Bridging gaps with care and purpose
In Portland Public Schools, teams focused on tackling big equity questions like how to make transitions from preschool to kindergarten more consistent and culturally responsive, especially for families who haven’t always been well supported by the system.
Continuity for young learners
In Phoenix Talent school district, educators worked together to ensure kids experience similar care and routines in preschool and kindergarten classrooms. It’s helping children feel more supported as they move from one classroom to the next.
Centering children and families needs
We introduced empathy interviews as a tool for listening with intention to our Early School Success network. Educators are using this to listen more closely to children and families. This helps them make decisions grounded in real experiences not just assumptions.
Stronger starts for families
Districts like Eugene 4J redesigned how schools welcome families at the start of the year. Now, orientation is more consistent, more caring, and better connected to what young children actually need.
Learning that makes a difference
Educators tell us our workshops spark “aha” moments and lead to real changes in their work. Across every cohort, participants say they walk away with tools and insights they use right away and that the experience feels meaningful and lasting.
